Why You Need an Ultrasound
Get the Full Picture Before You Decide
A positive pregnancy test is just the beginning. To fully understand your pregnancy—and protect your health—you need more than just a test. An ultrasound provides critical details that help you make informed decisions with clarity and confidence.
At ThriVe® Metro East, we offer no-cost limited OB ultrasounds following a positive pregnancy test. Our caring, licensed medical staff is here to answer your questions and walk with you every step of the way.
🩺 What Is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound uses safe, low-power sound waves to create an image of your pregnancy. This scan allows a medical professional to evaluate what’s happening in your body and assess the health and development of the pregnancy.
-
Early pregnancy: A transvaginal ultrasound is performed using a small wand-like device (transducer) gently inserted into the vagina to get the clearest image.
-
Later pregnancy: An abdominal ultrasound may be used, with the transducer placed on your stomach.
📊 What an Ultrasound Can Tell You
Before you make any decision, an ultrasound provides key medical information that matters:
✅ Viability
Is the pregnancy developing?
Up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, often without immediate symptoms. An ultrasound can detect a heartbeat and confirm that the pregnancy is progressing normally. If a miscarriage has occurred, you may need medical follow-up to protect your health.
⏱️ Gestational Age
How far along are you?
Knowing your gestational age is vital when considering your options. For example, the abortion pill is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks. Taking it after that point could increase your risk of complications.
📍 Location
Where is the pregnancy located?
A healthy pregnancy develops in the uterus. If it’s implanted elsewhere—like in a fallopian tube or cervix—it may be an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition that needs immediate medical attention.
